If COVID-19 taught us one thing, it is that our world and jobs are rapidly changing and evolving. To gain insight into the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, the International Research Institute on Social Fraud (IRIS) of Ghent University conducts an industry-wide study on the employment and well-being of pilots, cabin crew and ground handlers with the support of both the International and European Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF and ETF).
Six years ago, our research group conducted a study on ‘Atypical forms of employment in the aviation sector’ among pilots. During the lockdown, we carried out a study about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the employment landscape in EU aviation among both pilots and cabin crew (see Previous Research). Today, we broaden our scope to pilots, cabin crew and also ground handlers to gain better insight in the employment situation, well-being, relationships with management and the safety climate in the heavily affected aviation sector. Our aim is to present a clear overview of the employment landscape in aviation. In other words: How do airlines and ground handling companies work today? In which ways has the work situation changed in the sector because of the pandemic? How has the crisis affected those working in aviation, both as part of the workforce and as a person? Our study goes beyond mere academic objectives. By helping us answer the above questions, we will all gain new and interesting insights in the aviation industry, be able to detect good practices and learn from them. Moreover, through this study, you help shape the future of aviation as we will send our research report to policy makers and stakeholders in order to inform them about the current situation in aviation. This way, we can build a better tomorrow together. |
Our Partnership
ETF
In civil aviation, the ETF represents the interests of around 386 000 workers across the industry. As such, it promotes solidarity, cooperation, joint action and understanding among the European civil aviation trade unions that are affiliated to the ETF.

The International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) is a democratic, affiliate-led federation recognised as the world’s leading transport authority. They fight passionately to improve working lives, connecting nearly 700 affiliated trade unions from 150 countries that may otherwise be isolated and helping their members to secure rights, equality and justice. They are the voice for nearly 20 million working men and women across the world.
